The Mount of Olives offers the most iconic panoramic view of Jerusalem's Old City, framed by ancient olive trees and 150,000 Jewish graves awaiting the resurrection. This ridge east of Jerusalem is sacred to Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike.

Biblical Significance

Jewish Tradition According to prophecy, the Messiah will appear on the Mount of Olives and enter Jerusalem through the Eastern Gate. The world's oldest Jewish cemetery has been here for 3,000 years.

Christian Sites Jesus spent His final nights here, was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, ascended to heaven from this mountain, and will return here at the Second Coming.

Key Sites

Church of All Nations (Basilica of the Agony) Built over the rock where Jesus prayed before His arrest. The stunning mosaic facade depicts Jesus' suffering.

Garden of Gethsemane Eight ancient olive trees (some possibly 2,000 years old) in the garden where Jesus prayed and was arrested.

Tomb of the Virgin Mary Underground church (4th century) venerated by Eastern Orthodox and Muslims as Mary's burial place.

Dominus Flevit "The Lord Wept"—a tear-shaped chapel where Jesus wept over Jerusalem. The altar window frames the Old City perfectly.

Church of the Pater Noster Built where Jesus taught the Lord's Prayer. The prayer is displayed in over 140 languages on ceramic tiles.

Chapel of the Ascension Octagonal structure (now a mosque) marking where Jesus ascended to heaven. A footprint in the rock is venerated.

Practical Tips

Start at the top (take a taxi) and walk down, visiting sites along the way. The walk is steep but manageable. End at the Garden of Gethsemane near the Old City. Early morning offers the best light for photography.
