The Dome of the Rock is one of the oldest and most beautiful examples of early Islamic architecture. Its magnificent golden dome dominates the Jerusalem skyline and has become an iconic symbol of the city.

Sacred Significance

Built in 691 CE by Caliph Abd al-Malik, the shrine encloses the Foundation Stone (al-Sakhra), sacred to both Islam and Judaism. Muslims believe this is where Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven during the Night Journey. In Jewish tradition, it's where Abraham prepared to sacrifice Isaac.

Architectural Marvel

The Dome The dome is 20 meters in diameter and covered with 80 kg of gold leaf, donated by King Hussein of Jordan in 1993.

The Octagonal Structure The building features stunning blue Persian tiles, intricate mosaics, and carved marble. The geometric patterns and calligraphy are masterpieces of Islamic art.
