Biblical Significance
This is where Mary received the angel Gabriel's announcement that she would bear the Son of God, and where Jesus grew up and began His ministry before being rejected by His townspeople.
Major Sites
Basilica of the Annunciation The largest church in the Middle East, built over the traditional site of Mary's home. The lower church contains the Grotto of the Annunciation; the upper church features stunning modern artwork depicting Mary from countries worldwide.
St. Joseph's Church Built over the traditional site of Joseph's carpentry workshop, with underground caves and a beautiful chapel.
Mary's Well The traditional site where Mary drew water and possibly received Gabriel's first message. The ornate Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation stands here.
Ancient Nazareth Village A reconstructed 1st-century village showing life as Jesus would have known it—an excellent living history experience.
Synagogue Church Built over the traditional site of the synagogue where Jesus read from Isaiah and declared Himself the Messiah.
The Old City
The Markets (Souks) Wander through narrow alleyways past spice shops, butchers, bakeries, and craft stores. This is authentic Middle Eastern market culture.
Arab-Israeli Cuisine Nazareth is famous for its food. Try knafeh (sweet cheese pastry), falafel, and Arab coffee. Many excellent restaurants serve traditional cuisine.
